The Messerschmitt Me P.1101 fighter prototype was 80% complete before the Americans found the previously unknown Oberammergau complex in the Bavarian mountains, a few days before the end of the war.
The American troops found the prototype hidden in a tunnel, but the Germans had hidden microfilms of the design and engineering details in four surrounding villages - the French Army finding many of them. One unique feature of the aircraft was that its wings could be adjusted to one of three different angles of sweepback before flight..
In the American research team was Robert J. Woods, of the Bell Aircraft Works. He and Messerschmitt chief designer Woldemar Voight lobbied for the completion of the prototype. This proved to be impossible, due to the fact that most of the design documents were now in France (which they refused to share at this point in time), and other key information had been destroyed.
In 1948 the aircraft was shipped back to the Bell Aircraft Works in Buffalo, but fell of a freight car, ruling out any further repair and flight testing. However, it was to provide the inspiration/basis for the Bell X-5, the worlds first variable geometry aircraft..
