Single Point of Failure

In another comment, I mentioned that I worked at a Commodore dealer and refused to sell them. Well, I gotta say that’s a slight exaggeration, I tried to talk people out of buying one (for something like a Kaypro instead) but my intentions were not cynical. I just thought that compared to their nearest competitors (Apple II and Atari 800) they were pure junk. I still hold that opinion.

However, I have to relate a story of customer satisfaction. I sold one to a woman who appeared to be in her 80’s once. She insisted that’s what she wanted. OK. I figured I was in for hours and hours of free support, but instead, I didn’t see her again for several weeks, when she came in wanting to buy a modem.

She said she loved it and loved programming, and wanted to get deeper into it. Wow. I asked her if she had someone teaching her, and she said that she just read the manual, starting with page one, cover to cover before she even turned it on. It comes with a fairly thick set of manuals. Wow. Old school discipline. They don’t make ‘em like her anymore.

I miss those days. Why would you ever need a modem that brought down text faster than you could read it?
